Wasabi gains ISO certification to boost cloud data security
Wasabi Technologies has announced it has achieved ISO/IEC 27001 certification for its information security management systems.
The attainment of this globally recognised standard formalises Wasabi's approach to data protection, which the company says is increasingly important as organisations are impacted by rising costs linked to data breaches.
According to figures from IBM cited by Wasabi, data breaches now cost organisations an average of USD $4.88 million worldwide. In this context, certification provides an added layer of reassurance for Chief Information Security Officers and IT leaders as they pursue cloud migration strategies without undermining their security postures.
The ISO/IEC 27001 certification evaluates an organisation's ability to manage and protect information assets. Wasabi states the certification demonstrates that its security architecture meets rigorous standards for safeguarding large quantities of sensitive data. This is pertinent for sectors including healthcare, education, government, financial services, and media operating on a global scale.
"ISO/IEC 27001 isn't just a check-the-box exercise for Wasabi. It's about proactively helping our customers navigate a difficult cyber threat and compliance landscape," said David Friend, co-founder and CEO of Wasabi Technologies. "While other cloud providers force customers to choose between security, performance, and affordability, we deliver all three without compromise. This certification complements our data center operators' existing ISO 27001 certifications, meaning our customers benefit from a fully certified storage stack from infrastructure to application layer."
For public and private sector organisations, the certification is designed to offer multiple benefits. The company highlights that regulatory compliance can be simplified, as alignment with a global regulatory framework is achieved automatically with ISO/IEC 27001 certification.
Wasabi also points to risk mitigation, where threat detection and response protocols are used to protect information from evolving cyber threats. Audit readiness is addressed through built-in documentation and monitoring, facilitating compliance reporting.
The cloud storage provider notes its adoption of a Zero-Trust Architecture, utilising advanced encryption and access controls to secure data at rest and during transmission. According to Wasabi, security measures extend beyond the certification itself, including immutable storage and multi-user authentication, which are intended to provide additional defences against ransomware threats.
Wasabi's certification follows a trend within the industry of cloud providers continuing to raise their security standards to meet customer demands in increasingly regulated sectors. The firm says the ISO/IEC 27001 recognition is intended to assure both new and existing customers that their data is managed in accordance with global best practices.
By achieving this certification, Wasabi aims to support IT leaders looking for solutions that do not require trade-offs between cost, performance, and data security, particularly in fields where compliance and data integrity are mission-critical.
