QuintessenceLabs deploys key appliance in Equinix centres

Wed, 6th Nov 2024

QuintessenceLabs has deployed its Trusted Security Foundation key and policy manager appliance within Equinix data centres to aid organisations in defending against emerging quantum computing threats.

QuintessenceLabs, a firm recognised for its work in quantum-safe encryption, announced the installation of its Trusted Security Foundation appliance in Equinix's International Business Exchange centre in Canberra. This deployment aims to bolster defensive measures against the cryptographic risks posed by the advent of quantum computing technology.

Quantum computers are anticipated to possess the capability to crack existing encryption methods in mere minutes. With nation-state actors currently collecting encrypted sensitive data for future decryption, this presents a pressing concern. In response, the Australian Signals Directorate is advising organisations to transition to Post-Quantum Cryptographic (PQC) algorithms. Furthermore, the National Institute of Standards and Technology in the United States has introduced initial standards for post-quantum cryptography, highlighting the urgency of adopting cryptographic agility.

Enterprises across various sectors face difficulties in managing robust encryption due to the complex nature of handling encryption keys across diverse environments. This challenge is compounded as the number of encryption keys required is set to surge into the millions amid the rise of 5G, IoT, and sensorised environments.

Vikram Sharma, Founder and CEO of QuintessenceLabs, stated, "The advent of quantum computing presents risks to critical elements of today's public key infrastructure. To mitigate these, QuintessenceLabs is pioneering technologies that support both current encryption standards and emerging post-quantum cryptography. A clear benefit of hosting our technology with Equinix is its high-quality infrastructure, connectivity and global footprint, which supports our expansion efforts. The easy process of installing our TSF product inside Equinix data centres opens up exciting commercial opportunities in key strategic markets around the world."

Following the Canberra installation, QuintessenceLabs plans to expand its presence to additional Equinix IBX locations in the United States and Asia-Pacific. This would allow both public and private sector organisations to employ scalable encryption solutions within their environments, with options for an as-a-service model to cater to diverse customer requirements.

Guy Danskine, Managing Director of Equinix Australia, remarked, "Equinix is committed to facilitating strong cybersecurity solutions for our customers and partners, so it's important to be working closely with quantum innovators like QuintessenceLabs, and preparing customers for a post-quantum environment. By choosing Equinix as its digital infrastructure partner, together we can offer customers a seamless deployment method from on prem to hybrid IT environments and a clear pathway to quantum resilience with a trusted and recognised leader, a powerful and compelling solution for our mutual customers."

Equinix's global network, encompassing over 10,000 customers, is positioned to support businesses like QuintessenceLabs in tapping into the growth and transition towards quantum technologies across various sectors including enhanced cybersecurity and improved power efficiency. Through its platform, Equinix facilitates seamless connectivity with QuintessenceLabs' quantum key management and distribution solutions using high-speed, low-latency, and private network connections.

QuintessenceLabs is also set to introduce virtual versions of its key management capabilities at Equinix's IBX centres to bolster scalability and accessibility while maintaining stringent security protocols. The company's portfolio of hardware and software products aims to ensure efficient encryption key management for comprehensive enterprise-scale data protection.
