Akamai boosts App & API Protector with advanced DDoS defences
Mon, 11th Mar 2024

Akamai Technologies has announced noteworthy enhancements to its flagship product, Akamai App & API Protector, including sophisticated defenses against application-layer distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. The firm's App & API Protector product now includes improved Layer 7 DDoS protections, designed to facilitate precise detection and mitigation of short DDoS attack bursts and utilise client reputation scores for better rate limiting.

Akamai's new URL Protection capability ensures the availability of mission-critical URLs, APIs, and microservices. This functionality prioritises legitimate traffic during extensive distributed attacks, playing a crucial role in bolstering and simplifying web application and API security. Further contributing to the product's refined security measures is the Browser Impersonation Detection feature, which utilises machine learning to gain in-depth insights into browser behaviours. This feature aims to reduce false positives and enhance the detection of malicious bots.

The updated App & API Protector includes a wider range of capabilities to simplify users' onboarding processes and expedite application set-up. Customers can benefit from the CVE Protection Catalog that provides valuable insights to prioritise security efforts aligned with Akamai's protections.

The product now offers a search mechanism for the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) database that enables customers to identify Akamai's protective measures against a specific vulnerability, assess threat levels, and get detailed CVE information. With the launch of its Client-Side Protection & Compliance, Akamai assists customers in complying with PCI DSS v4 regulations and meeting various industry and global compliance standards.

Rupesh Chokshi, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Application Security at Akamai, stated: "The evolution of Akamai App & API Protector highlights our focus on innovation and a customer-centric approach. These machine learning enhancements and shared telemetry across Akamai are designed to strengthen and simplify web application and API defense. They provide the strategic edge necessary for businesses to thrive in today's digital economy."

Testifying to Akamai's robust security service, Jerome Etienne, Group Chief Information Security Officer at Groupe Rocher, said: "We love working with Akamai. They continuously deliver excellent reliability and performance through their solutions, which are also fully compliant with the latest security regulation. The team is pretty much an extension of our own, acting in a highly professional manner and always available if we need any help. They have enabled us to delight our customers with safe and efficient shopping experiences."

The fresh capabilities underline Akamai's commitment to enhancing the security posture of its clients. Akamai's App & API Protector equips customers with proactive, intelligent defense mechanisms that are capable of tackling the security threats of today and prepared for the challenges of the future.
