Varonis acquires SlashNext for up to USD $150 million to boost AI email security
Varonis has acquired AI-native email security provider SlashNext in a transaction valued up to USD $150 million, expanding its threat detection and response capabilities.
The deal includes performance-based retention awards and brings together Varonis' existing expertise in data security with SlashNext's focus on combating advanced phishing and social engineering attacks.
Acquisition details
SlashNext was founded by Atif Mushtaq, who was previously one of the main architects of FireEye's core malware sandbox technology. SlashNext utilises predictive artificial intelligence to identify and mitigate evasive phishing threats that target users not only through email but also through widely-used communication platforms such as WhatsApp, Slack, and Teams.
The acquisition allows Varonis to enhance its platform, with the intention to offer security teams broader visibility and response capabilities across various communication channels, addressing attacks at early stages of the attack path.
"The acquisition of SlashNext is a natural evolution of our platform and significantly expands our total addressable market," said Yaki Faitelson, CEO, and Co-Founder of Varonis. "By connecting the dots between email, identity, and data we will dramatically increase the value of our MDDR service and help customers stop threats in their inbox, where many data breaches begin."
Atif Mushtaq, Founder and Chief Product Officer of SlashNext, commented on joining forces with Varonis and shared his perspective on the future of email and multi-channel threat protection.
"At SlashNext, we built a fast, automated solution to stop advanced threats across communication channels. I'm excited to join the Varonis team on their mission to protect the world's data, giving customers end-to-end protection from the first point of attack to the last."
Email security market growth
The email security sector is expected to see significant growth, with projections indicating an increase in market value from USD $5.2 billion in 2025 to USD $10.7 billion by 2032. The expansion is driven by a rise in artificial intelligence-powered phishing and business email compromise (BEC) attacks targeting organisations globally.
SlashNext's technology leverages several AI modelling techniques, including computer vision, natural language processing, and virtual browsers. These are designed to identify threats with greater accuracy and speed, reflecting the growing prevalence of multi-vector cyberattacks that move beyond traditional email environments to include instant messaging and collaboration tools.
Third-party verification
An independent evaluation undertaken by the Tolly Group assessed the performance of cloud email security providers. In that test, SlashNext registered a 99% overall detection accuracy and achieved a 100% detection rate for both BEC and QR code-based attacks, outperforming other providers such as Abnormal Security and Mimecast.
This validation of SlashNext's detection capabilities supports Varonis's efforts to deliver robust data breach prevention, now extended to users' inboxes and associated messaging tools.
Broader integration plans
Varonis aims to integrate SlashNext's AI-driven threat prevention tools into its offerings for CISOs seeking a consolidated security approach. The acquisition is intended to strengthen Varonis's Managed Data Detection and Response (MDDR) service by providing coverage that spans user identity, data, and communications, where many attack campaigns are initiated.
Varonis's data security platform specialises in data discovery, classification, exposure removal, and automated detection of advanced threats across cloud, hybrid, and on-premises environments. The expanded capabilities, following the integration with SlashNext, are intended to further automate security outcomes across data security posture management, data access governance, email protection, and AI security use cases.
