Tanium named Leader in IDC report on Windows tools

Wed, 21st Jan 2026

Tanium has been named a Leader in IDC MarketScape's vendor assessment for worldwide client endpoint management software focused on Windows device management for 2025-2026.

The assessment covers vendors that supply tools used by large organisations to manage Windows endpoints across desktops, servers and specialised devices. Tanium said it received the Leader placement for the second time in this IDC MarketScape category.

IDC Research Vice President Phil Hochmuth said the Windows estate remains central for many enterprises, even as organisations deal with a wider mix of device types.

"Windows continues to dominate as the leading operating system across global enterprises despite ever-increasing device diversity. In turn, secure endpoint management with speed and scale for Windows environments is crucial, especially as they increase in complexity," said Phil Hochmuth, Research Vice President, Endpoint Device Management and Enterprise Mobility, IDC. "Tanium's unified platform continues to set the pace for innovation in the market, delivering advanced automation and deep integration with Microsoft's ecosystem - based on real-time endpoint intelligence. Organisations can turn to Tanium to maintain operational resilience, consistent security and compliance," said Hochmuth.

Platform scope

IDC MarketScape's report described Tanium's core product as the Tanium Autonomous IT Platform. The report said Tanium positions this product as a single platform that combines endpoint management, exposure management and security operations.

The assessment said Tanium targets enterprises managing Windows devices. It cited support across Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs, Windows Server and Windows IoT endpoints.

IDC MarketScape also pointed to the product's relationship with Microsoft's tooling. It stated that Tanium's platform complements Windows environments by addressing areas that organisations may not cover through Microsoft's native options.

The report said, "Tanium's platform complements Windows ecosystems by bridging gaps in endpoint performance monitoring, compliance reporting and automation that are not fully addressed by native Microsoft tools like Intune or Configuration Manager."

Autonomous IT

Tanium framed the IDC recognition as part of a broader push in the market towards what it calls Autonomous IT. The company linked that theme to consolidating tools and aligning IT and security operations under a single operating model.

Tanium highlighted product features it associates with that approach. It referenced Tanium Ask and described it as an agentic experience for configuration and remediation workflows. Tanium also cited Tanium Confidence Score and described it as guidance for progressive rollouts. It referenced Adaptive Actions and described it as automation for patching and configuration at scale.

The company also pointed to Microsoft integrations as part of its approach for Windows environments. It said those integrations sit within the Tanium Autonomous IT Platform.

Chief Technology Officer Matt Quinn linked the product direction to an elevated level of cyber risk and the operational demands of managing Windows at scale.

"With the unprecedented pace and intensity of cyber risk, managing and securing Windows environments at speed and scale has never been more critical," said Matt Quinn, Chief Technology Officer, Tanium. "We believe the IDC MarketScape's recognition underscores the importance of Autonomous IT - bringing IT and security operations together in a single, unified platform with AI and real-time endpoint intelligence to reduce complexity and costs while strengthening operational resilience," said Quinn.

Market assessments

IDC MarketScape uses a scoring model that compares technology suppliers in a given market. The model combines qualitative and quantitative criteria and places vendors in a single graphical view. IDC said the framework compares product and service offerings, strategies and market success factors.

Tanium also said it has been recognised as a Leader in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Endpoint Management Tools. The company placed that alongside the IDC MarketScape result in its description of third-party assessments of its endpoint management position.

Tanium said it expects demand to continue for tools that manage Windows endpoints while also addressing security and operational requirements across mixed device estates.
