Percona launches fixed-fee database services portfolio

Percona has launched a fixed-fee portfolio of professional services for database teams, aimed at defined projects in areas such as security, performance and migrations.

The offering is structured around agreed scope, deliverables and expected outcomes to reduce the lengthy scoping and uncertain budgets that often come with traditional consulting work.

Percona, which provides open source database software, support and services, said the portfolio covers database health, architecture and design, performance tuning, monitoring, security and migrations. The services apply across MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Valkey and Redis environments.

The move comes as infrastructure teams face rising complexity in database operations and often struggle to bring in specialist help quickly, even when risks are already known. Important work is frequently delayed before technical work begins because consulting engagements can involve open-ended timelines and unclear cost expectations.

Defined projects

Percona has set out six service lines within the new portfolio: Health Audit, Architecture and Design, Performance Tuning, Database Monitoring Quickstart, Security Assessment and Migrations.

Under the Health Audit service, Percona assesses database health, configuration, performance and security, then provides prioritised recommendations for remediation. The Architecture and Design service is intended to build or validate database setups against business and growth requirements, while Performance Tuning focuses on root-cause analysis and tested changes.

Database Monitoring Quickstart centres on installation, configuration, alerting guidance and training for Percona Monitoring and Management. The Security Assessment reviews databases against compliance requirements or internal policies. The Migrations service covers planning and testing, a validated target environment, a documented rollback path, support during production cutover and monitoring after go-live.

Percona said the fixed-fee model is intended to give customers faster access to specialist input for specific problems. Where work extends beyond a set scope, projects will instead be structured around a plan tailored to the customer's infrastructure needs.

Chief Executive Officer Peter Farkas linked the new portfolio to Percona's experience working with customers running complex database environments.

Consulting shift

The launch reflects a broader trend in technology services towards more tightly defined consulting engagements, particularly in infrastructure and operations work where internal teams may already understand the problem but need external expertise to solve it. In database management, those needs often involve balancing reliability, security and performance while handling migrations and architectural changes with limited disruption.

For Percona, the new portfolio more formally packages an existing professional services business. The company has spent two decades helping organisations address database issues and is now presenting some of that work as narrower engagements with specified outcomes from the start.

That approach may appeal to organisations trying to avoid drawn-out consulting projects before any practical work begins. By setting objectives and deliverables in advance, vendors can give customers a clearer view of cost and expected results, while limiting the ambiguity that can delay approval for technical work.

The database market remains fragmented across open source and proprietary technologies, and many organisations operate mixed estates spanning multiple engines and deployment models. That can make specialist support harder to source internally, especially when teams are dealing with operational risk, compliance demands or migration deadlines.

Percona's services focus on those pressure points, from identifying hidden operational risks and reviewing architecture to preparing cutover plans for database moves. Each engagement is tailored to the customer's environment, workload, architecture and business requirements.

The new portfolio gives database teams a menu of scoped projects rather than a single open-ended consulting route, with support covering health, design, tuning, monitoring, security and migrations across a range of widely used database platforms.
