Palo Alto Networks unveils AI-driven OT security solutions

Thu, 31st Oct 2024

Palo Alto Networks has announced new security solutions aimed at safeguarding operational technology (OT) environments from increasing cybersecurity threats.

The company has introduced enhancements to its OT Security solution, integrating features such as risk-based guided virtual patching powered by Precision AI, the Prisma Access Browser with Privileged Remote Access, and machine-learning-powered Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFWs) suitable for harsh industrial environments.

According to the 2024 State of OT Security report by Palo Alto Networks and ABI Research, 70% of industrial organisations faced cyberattacks on their OT environments in the past year, with nearly 25% of these instances causing operational shutdowns and business disruptions.

Anand Oswal, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Network Security at Palo Alto Networks, said, "The rise in the frequency and sophistication of OT attacks, often driven by AI, highlights the urgent need for robust, OT-specific security measures. Organisations must implement comprehensive solutions that ensure real-time visibility, end-to-end protection and simplified security management. Palo Alto Networks OT Security solution, powered by Precision AI, secures both OT and converged IT/OT consistently to combat these challenges and protect critical infrastructure."

Sid Snitkin, Vice President of Cybersecurity Services at ARC Industrial Cybersecurity, commented, "Operational technology environments are becoming increasingly complex and interconnected, making them more susceptible to cyber threats. The ability to deploy AI-powered tools like guided virtual patching is a game-changer for industrial cybersecurity. It enables organisations to address vulnerabilities in real-time without the costly and often disruptive downtime that traditional patching methods would require. This approach reduces risks and enhances the overall resilience of OT infrastructures."

Palo Alto Networks' updated OT Security solution covers networks, assets, remote operations, and 5G networks, further providing customers with visibility and operational efficiencies.

Among the new features is enhanced remote operations through secure access for OT. The Prisma Access Browser delivers Privileged Remote Access, simplifying deployment and security by enabling immediate secure access for authorised users, such as contractors and partners. This feature includes just-in-time access and session recording for essential workflows.

The solution also addresses OT vulnerabilities promptly without disrupting operations. Guided Virtual Patching with Industrial OT Security allows security teams to quickly mitigate critical vulnerabilities using Precision AI without causing downtime. This automation helps protect hard-to-patch systems and extends the lifespan of legacy assets.

Additionally, the release offers protection for remote industrial assets in harsh conditions with the ruggedised PA-400R Series firewalls, suitable for environments like utility substations and factory floors. These firewalls are designed for space-constrained areas and can be easily installed on DIN rails, featuring 5G connectivity and fail-to-wire capabilities to maintain security and connectivity.
