Norton unveils Genie scam detection assistant in ChatGPT

Fri, 13th Mar 2026

Norton has launched an AI-based scam detection assistant inside ChatGPT, letting users check suspicious messages and links within a conversation.

The assistant, called Genie, appears as a Norton app in ChatGPT. Users tag "@Norton" and paste emails, texts, images, or URLs. It then flags the content as safe, risky, or likely a scam, and suggests next steps.

The launch reflects how consumers increasingly use general-purpose AI tools to sanity-check messages claiming to be from banks, delivery firms, employers, or well-known brands. Scams are also the dominant consumer-focused cyber threat, according to figures cited by Gen, which owns the Norton brand.

Gen's Threat Report found that more than 90% of threats targeting people in 2025 came from scams, phishing, and fake ads. Many are designed to look routine and credible, making it harder to judge whether a message is genuine.

How it works

Norton's ChatGPT app accepts inputs that mirror common consumer scenarios, including urgent warnings that an account will be locked, delivery messages with tracking links, and banking alerts that push for immediate action.

Norton positions the app as broader than link reputation checking. Genie assesses a message's context and common scam tactics, analysing language and apparent intent alongside URL and domain checks.

That reflects how scam campaigns often operate. Fraudulent messages may use pressure, impersonation, or requests for personal information. These signals can appear even when links are newly created or when scammers evade simple blocklists by rotating domains and URLs.

Genie also explains why a message may be risky and offers advice such as not replying, avoiding links, or deleting the message. It accepts images as well, which can help when users receive screenshots of conversations, payment prompts, or branded graphics used in social engineering.

ChatGPT access

The Norton app sits in ChatGPT's app environment. Users sign in to ChatGPT, open the Apps section, connect the official Norton app, and invoke it by typing "@Norton" in a conversation.

The app is supported across Free, Plus, Team, and Enterprise tiers where ChatGPT apps are available. That gives it potential reach among consumers and workplaces, where staff may receive suspicious messages outside corporate email security systems.

The release also points to a broader shift in how consumer security products are delivered. Rather than relying only on standalone software, vendors are placing security checks into the digital spaces where people already spend time. Messaging apps, browsers, and AI chat tools are becoming new distribution points for advice and automated analysis.

Product context

Gen says Genie in ChatGPT complements its broader protection products, including Norton 360. The company positions Genie as a way to evaluate scam messages as they arrive, before a user engages.

Gen owns a portfolio of consumer cyber-safety brands, including Norton, and has emphasised cyber safety and identity protection as scams and fraud become a mainstream concern.

Integrating with ChatGPT also places Norton in a fast-moving market for AI assistants that analyse content. Consumers already paste emails and texts into chatbots to ask whether they look legitimate. That practice raises questions about privacy and handling sensitive data, and vendors are beginning to offer purpose-built alternatives within familiar interfaces.

Leena Elias, chief product officer at Gen, framed the launch as a response to changing user behaviour.

"AI is quickly becoming part of our daily lives. People are already asking ChatGPT whether they should click, pay, or respond," said Leena Elias, chief product officer at Gen. "With Genie in ChatGPT, we are extending Norton's scam analysis and advice directly into those conversations. In addition to the comprehensive protection people receive with Norton 360, we're helping them make safer decisions in the moment."
