Meta & Toyota join eBPF Foundation board as leaders

The eBPF Foundation has added Meta and Toyota as members and appointed new Governing Board leaders, broadening its backing across the technology and automotive sectors.

Meta joined as a Platinum Member and Toyota as a Silver Member. The foundation also elected Bill Mulligan of Isovalent at Cisco as board chair, Anjali Kanak of Netflix as board treasurer, and Kenta Tada of Toyota as the Silver Member board representative.

eBPF, which extends and observes kernel-level behaviour in computing systems, has gained traction in cloud infrastructure, security and networking. The latest membership and board changes suggest broader interest beyond its traditional base, particularly in automotive and edge environments, where software observability and system control have become more important.

The new support is expected to help maintain tooling, infrastructure and collaboration around upstream development, while supporting work on security and reliability. That puts the organisation at the centre of efforts to shape how eBPF evolves as more companies deploy it in production systems.

Board changes

Mulligan's appointment puts the chair role in the hands of a figure closely associated with the eBPF and cloud-native community. Kanak's election adds financial oversight from a senior engineering leader at Netflix, a company known for using eBPF in network observability and security. Tada's seat gives Toyota direct representation on the board as the foundation seeks to reflect use cases beyond large-scale cloud computing.

The foundation's governing structure matters because eBPF development depends heavily on co-ordination between maintainers, contributors and corporate users. As adoption widens, board members can influence priorities for technical direction, community support, and the balance between experimentation and safeguards.

Mulligan described the shift as a sign of increasing industry reliance on the technology. "eBPF is becoming the strategic technology of choice for infrastructure platforms and teams. The eBPF Foundation's growing membership across industries and use cases demonstrates the critical value of safely reprogramming the kernel," said Bill Mulligan, Governing Board Chair, eBPF Foundation.

He added: "These new investments will sustain eBPF's innovation across everything from hyperscale clouds to embedded environments and position the technology to disrupt hundreds of billions of dollars in enterprise software and hardware spend. With these commitments, our community will continue to focus on advancing upstream development, promoting broader adoption, and enhancing eBPF's long-term security and reliability."

Broader reach

Meta's entry as a Platinum Member is notable because of its scale and influence in infrastructure engineering. Its involvement suggests that large internet platforms still see strategic value in eBPF as they refine monitoring, security and systems software in increasingly complex computing environments.

Meta framed its membership as part of a longer-term commitment to the underlying open source work. "We remain committed to developing and advancing eBPF, and to supporting the tireless community of maintainers and developers who make it possible. eBPF is uniquely positioned to deliver advanced kernel capabilities today and well into the future, even as AI continues to reshape how we build software," said Mykola Lysenko, Engineering Manager, Meta.

Toyota's decision to join points to another shift: the move of eBPF into embedded and automotive systems. That is a different operating context from hyperscale data centres, with tighter hardware constraints and stricter safety requirements. It also raises new questions about how the technology can be adapted for reliability-sensitive environments.

Toyota linked its involvement to those use cases. "At Toyota, we see eBPF as a key technology to enable deep observability and safety-oriented programmability in resource-constrained environments such as embedded and automotive systems. We are committed to working with the open source community to help ensure that eBPF can be adopted broadly and responsibly across these environments," said Hirofumi Inoue, President of Advanced R&D and Engineering Company, Toyota Motor Corporation.

The expansion of the foundation's membership reflects a wider pattern in open source infrastructure, where technologies first adopted by specialist cloud and networking teams are moving into more diverse sectors. In eBPF's case, that shift has implications not only for product development but also for governance, because the needs of social media platforms, streaming groups and carmakers are unlikely to be identical.

By bringing in Meta and Toyota while elevating representatives from Cisco-linked Isovalent, Netflix and Toyota, the eBPF Foundation is signalling that debate over the technology's next phase will be shaped by a broader set of commercial users and operating environments. Toyota's focus on "resource-constrained environments such as embedded and automotive systems" underlines how far that discussion has moved beyond the data centre.
