Jemena boosts site security with Genetec platform rollout across Australia

Tue, 2nd Dec 2025

Jemena has implemented Genetec Security Centre across its critical infrastructure sites in Australia, replacing its previous video surveillance and physical security systems. The deployment aims to enhance security, support compliance with regulatory standards, and increase operational efficiency for the utility provider.

System transition

The project saw Jemena roll out a unified security platform to manage access control, video surveillance, automatic license plate recognition, and communications. The system will allow the business to manage security policies, run investigations, and introduce additional capabilities as needed. With operations spanning a vast territory, Jemena expects the new platform to reduce the need for staff travel and site visits in response to security incidents.

Remote coverage

The centralised Security Centre replaces a range of single-use security tools with one platform. It supports remote monitoring across the company's portfolio, including isolated and geographically dispersed locations. Jemena operates nearly 50 sites such as offices, warehouses, depots, and gas facilities using this new platform.

Approximately 300 video surveillance cameras, 40 SIP-controlled intercom devices, and several automatic license plate recognition devices are now managed under Security Centre. The company has also adopted thermal perimeter detection and biometric authentication for stricter access controls.

Operational improvements

Security operators can remotely monitor video feeds, conduct two-way intercom calls, and respond to alerts from the automatic license plate recognition system. The automation of Bluetooth mobile credentials has helped streamline onboarding and offboarding processes for staff, while also enhancing security at critical sites. These features have enabled Jemena to centralise monitoring and reduce the number of staff travels between locations.

The new system's federation feature provides a central view of all sites, supporting collaboration between security teams and staff from remote locations. Patrols can now be conducted virtually, which has already led to a reduction in vehicle use and associated carbon emissions.

Compliance pressures

The integrated system is designed to address growing compliance requirements facing the energy and utilities sector. Jemena supplies over 1.5 million homes, businesses, and industrial customers throughout Australia and operates some of the country's largest gas transmission pipelines.

"Implementing the Genetec platform has been a significant step forward in strengthening our asset protection and operational resilience," said Fiona Dunk, General Manager, Resilience and Compliance, Jemena.

"Its integrated capabilities have enhanced situational awareness, improved response times, and enabled smarter decision-making through centralised monitoring and analytics. This upgrade not only supports a safer working environment but also delivers long-term value through scalability, efficiency, and a future-ready security infrastructure for the increasingly complex environment we are working in now and in the future," said Dunk.

Technology collaboration

The company's security rollout followed a multi-year design and implementation process, with systems integrator Wilson Security overseeing the project. Federation technology within the platform has bridged multiple sites into a single management system.

"Wilson Security and Jemena have cultivated a long-standing, award-winning security collaboration that prioritises both innovation and compliance across these key critical infrastructure sites," said Carla Scuderi, Key Account Manager, Wilson Security. "By working closely together, we've built a deep understanding of Jemena's unique security needs, enabling us to support their goals with tailored, forward-looking technology solutions."
