Exclusive: Genetec’s Leon Langlais on security and data sovereignty

Mon, 12th Aug 2024

In an exclusive interview with TechDay, Genetec's Chief Product Officer in Asia Pacific, Leon Langlais, has provided a comprehensive look inside Genetec's trajectory, innovative products, and strategic approach to data sovereignty.

Based out of Singapore, Langlais has been instrumental in expanding Genetec's footprint in the region over the past two and a half years.

Genetec, a software company focused on physical security, is celebrating its 27th year of operation. Langlais, who has been with the company for six years, described the growth as "phenomenal".

"Since its creation, Genetec has had strong double-digit growth year after year, which has never slowed down," he said.

It comes as the company boasts over 2,000 employees worldwide, with around 100 employees in Asia - reflecting strategic growth in the region.

Highlighting Data Sovereignty

Data sovereignty, particularly the hosting of data onshore, is a crucial aspect for physical security technology companies. Langlais emphasizes the importance of protecting personal information and complying with regional regulations.

"There's a growing awareness around cybersecurity and personal information protection. Each country has its own standards, and it's a constantly evolving legal landscape," he said.

While keeping data local is primarily a legal consideration rather than a security measure, it does ensure better control and compliance with regulations.

"For example, when the Australian or New Zealand governments introduce regulations on data protection, having data locally ensures compliance and control."

Innovation and Product Development

Genetec's innovation strategy revolves around offering solutions that enhance security and operational efficiency. The company's latest product, Security Center SaaS, is a testament to this. Launched in May, this cloud-born addition to Genetec's Security Center platform supports a hybrid cloud solution, allowing customers to migrate to the cloud at their own pace.

"The cloud offers many benefits like quick deployment, ease of maintenance, and lower total cost of ownership," Langlais says.

He highlights the flexibility that Genetec's hybrid approach provides, accommodating various needs from small to large sites.

Intelligent Automation and Machine Learning

Genetec prefers the term "Intelligent Automation" over artificial intelligence. "We leverage technology to do the heavy lifting and assist humans in making better decisions."

Genetec employs machine learning in various applications, such as license plate recognition and video analytics.

One innovative application is the privacy protector, which blurs individuals in live video feeds to protect their privacy. Genetec's new semantic search feature allows users to perform searches in natural language, making the process more intuitive and efficient.

Collaboration with Technology Partners

Genetec maintains strong relationships with numerous technology partners, including camera vendors like Hanwha, Axis, i-PRO, and Bosch. These collaborations enhance product integration and innovation, particularly in areas like video analytics and cybersecurity.

Langlais highlights the partnership with Dell for their line of appliances, underscoring the importance of working closely with tech partners to elevate security standards and deliver robust solutions.

Addressing Customer Challenges

A common challenge among Genetec's customers is the presence of aging legacy infrastructure.

Such systems often lack cybersecurity measures and hinder the adoption of newer technologies.

"Changing security infrastructure is not simple, and customers need reliable partners to transition to better solutions with minimal disruption," Langlais told TechDay.

Genetec's unified platform, Security Center, addresses these challenges by offering a single pane of glass for monitoring and situational awareness. This platform allows customers to break silos and streamline operations across different departments.

Commitment to Privacy and Cybersecurity

According to Langlais, Genetec's dedication to both privacy and cybersecurity is what sets it apart from competitors.

"We've been advocating for cybersecurity and data protection for years," he explained. "It's a fundamental part of our product design."

"The company works closely with partners to elevate cybersecurity standards and protect customer data from potential threats."
