Cloudflare boosts generative AI security for Australian firms

Wed, 27th Aug 2025

Cloudflare has announced a series of updates aimed at boosting enterprise security in the use of generative AI tools among Australian organisations.

Shadow AI in the workplace

According to Cloudflare, more than 75% of employees in Australia use generative AI applications at work without comprehensive oversight or safeguards. This situation, often referred to as 'shadow AI', poses significant risks to sensitive corporate data and can undermine compliance with regulatory requirements.

To address this, Cloudflare has unveiled two new initiatives under its Secure AI vision. The company is positioning these capabilities as a direct response to the key concerns of Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) and Chief Information Officers (CIOs) in Australia - specifically regarding which AI applications can be trusted and how their adoption can be secured in the workplace.

Generative AI integrations

Cloudflare has become the first Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB) to integrate with the three leading generative AI platforms: ChatGPT Enterprise, Claude by Anthropic, and Google Gemini. These developments enable Cloudflare customers to monitor and manage the use of these tools in real time, with the intention of preventing data leakage, detecting potentially risky configurations, and stopping inappropriate use by default without requiring complex technical setups.

Generative AI is increasingly used across Australian enterprises for a range of tasks including editing content, summarising data, assisting with design, and debugging code. With this widespread use, the risk of accidental data exposure or failure to meet compliance obligations grows. Security teams face mounting pressure to implement proactive controls and maintain real-time oversight of employee interactions with AI platforms.

"Employees are always looking for an edge – ways to save time, spark creativity, or boost efficiency. Using Generative AI tools gives them that edge," said Matthew Prince, CEO and co-founder at Cloudflare. "But there is often a missing link between rapid innovation and safety. Cloudflare has already introduced a number of safeguards to help businesses embrace AI, and now, we're the only company that has built integrations directly into all three of the most popular tools to raise the bar on enterprise AI security for the whole industry."

Application Confidence Scores

In tandem with the AI integrations, Cloudflare announced a new methodology designed to help IT and security teams assess the trustworthiness of both SaaS and generative AI applications. This 'Application Confidence Score' approach allows organisations to build policies informed by the risk levels associated with different platforms. By doing so, teams can decide which tools to approve or restrict based on their assessed security posture and compliance status.

Cloudflare explained that its CASB continuously scans activities across ChatGPT Enterprise, Claude, and Google Gemini, providing automated, real-time alerts and visibility for security teams. This monitoring is intended to ensure sensitive corporate data remains protected and compliant as employees make greater use of AI-powered software in their daily work.

The company's approach aims to support businesses balancing the productivity gains from generative AI usage with the need for strict data protection and regulatory compliance. By integrating directly with popular generative AI tools, Cloudflare aims to offer security teams 'greater control and confidence' over how internal data is handled when accessed by AI platforms.

These updates underline Cloudflare's focus on serving enterprise customers navigating the complexities of AI adoption, particularly as adoption accelerates across the Australian business landscape.
