Bumble introduces reporting for AI-generated profile suspicions

Bumble has introduced a new safety measure allowing users to report profiles suspected of using AI-generated images and videos. This initiative addresses rising concerns about the authenticity of online profiles and aims to mitigate the risk of internet love scams and fraudulent activities on the platform.

According to recent statistics, there were over 400 reported cases of internet love scams in Singapore during the first half of 2023, as documented by the Sumsub Identity Fraud Report 2023. The report also indicated a fivefold increase in the use of deepfakes, artificial images, or AI-generated videos from 2022 to 2023. Bumble's survey revealed that 71% of Gen-Z and Millennial respondents believe there should be restrictions on using AI-generated content in dating profiles.

Risa Stein, Bumble’s VP of Product who oversees trust and safety efforts, commented on the new measure: "An essential part of creating a space to build meaningful connections is removing any element that is misleading or dangerous. We are committed to continually improving our technology to ensure that Bumble is a safe and trusted dating environment. By introducing this new reporting option, we can better understand how bad actors and fake profiles are using AI disingenuously so our community feels confident in making connections.”

This new reporting option complements Bumble's existing suite of AI-driven safety features. Earlier this year, the company rolled out the Deception Detector, an AI tool designed to identify spam, scam, and fake profiles. Within the first two months of its implementation, member reports of such profiles were reduced by 45%.

Additionally, Bumble launched the Private Detector tool, which automatically blurs potentially inappropriate nude images shared within the chat. Users are notified of the blurred content and given the option to block or report the image.

The company has also introduced enhancements to its For You feature, powered by AI, which curates a set of daily profiles tailored to users' preferences and past matches. This feature aims to improve the user experience by showcasing more relevant and potentially suitable matches.

The new safety update underscores Bumble's commitment to fostering a safe and reliable environment for its users, particularly as the dating landscape continues to evolve with the increasing integration of AI technologies.
