Bitdefender launches AI scam detector Scamio on WhatsApp in Australia

Mon, 27th May 2024

Bitdefender has announced the integration of its AI Scam Detector, Scamio, with WhatsApp in Australia. This new development enables Australians to utilise the popular messaging application to verify online scams and fraud instances efficiently.

According to the Global State of Scams 2023 Report, a significant 76 per cent of respondents reported encountering an online scam at least once a month. This statistic underscores the recurrent nature of online fraud and the increasing necessity for robust scam detection mechanisms. The introduction of Scamio aims to address these concerns by incorporating a highly accessible and user-friendly tool for scam verification within WhatsApp.

Users can interact with Scamio by submitting questionable content directly into the AI-driven chatbot and describing, in a conversational manner, the context in which they received the information. Scamio will then analyse the data and provide a verdict within seconds, alongside recommendations for any necessary further action. Additionally, Scamio can be saved as a contact on WhatsApp, functioning as a personal scam checker for individual users.

The development of Scamio is a strategic response to the increasing use of artificial intelligence and large language models by malicious actors. These threat actors are rapidly expanding their operations by exploiting popular messaging apps and online services to steal money, credentials, and personal data. Scamio's integration into WhatsApp is intended to disrupt these criminal activities by offering a sophisticated tool that can keep pace with the evolving tactics used by scammers.

With the enhanced accessibility granted by this new feature, Bitdefender aims to provide an additional layer of security for the Australian public, who are disproportionately targeted by online fraudsters. The convenience of having Scamio available within a widely-used app like WhatsApp is expected to streamline the process of scam verification for everyday users, reducing the time and effort required to identify potential scams.
