Australian firms embrace AI to bolster cybersecurity efforts

Yesterday

Australian IT professionals are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence (AI) to bolster their cybersecurity measures in response to evolving cyber threats.

According to GetApp's 2024 Data Security Survey involving 350 Australian IT professionals, 56% perceive AI as more of an ally than a threat in enhancing cybersecurity. Moreover, an overwhelming 91% of respondents expect an increase in cybersecurity spending by 2025, showing a robust commitment to strengthening security systems.

Investment in AI technologies for network security (41%) and cloud security (40%) are highlighted as priority areas for Australian businesses. The survey also indicates that 47% of IT professionals are already using AI tools to advance malware detection, underlining AI's significant role in threat detection and prevention. Furthermore, a notable 96% of Australian respondents utilise AI-assisted tools to enhance cybersecurity protocols, indicating widespread acceptance of AI in this domain.

Despite the potential risks associated with AI, such as deepfake impersonation and improved phishing techniques, the survey shows that the majority of Australian IT professionals trust AI to strengthen defences rather than assist attackers. Andrew Blair, Content Analyst at GetApp, stated, "AI is increasingly seen as a critical cybersecurity tool, with Australian IT professionals leading in its adoption to enhance data security and threat detection. Our findings suggest that while potential risks, like AI-enhanced phishing, remain, the prevailing sentiment among Australian IT professionals is that AI's potential to strengthen defences far outweighs its threats. This reflects a shift toward a proactive, structured approach to cybersecurity, where organisations are not only investing in AI-driven tools but are also developing human oversight to mitigate any ethical or compliance challenges."

Australian IT leaders are encouraged to adopt a structured approach to incorporating AI in their cybersecurity strategies to ensure successful implementation. This includes identifying specific areas where AI can improve IT security, developing a human-in-the-loop strategy to maintain ethical standards and oversight, and preparing data to be AI-ready for optimal and secure system performance.

The 2024 Data Security Survey by GetApp was conducted online in August 2024 and gathered insights from 4,000 IT professionals across 11 countries, with 350 participants from Australia. It aimed to explore global data security practices and the role of AI in enhancing cybersecurity measures.
