Asus ROG has opened Australian pre-orders for the limited-edition ROG XBOX Ally X20 handheld gaming PC, marking the gaming brand's 20th anniversary.
The new model sits at the top of the Ally handheld range. It introduces a 7.4-inch OLED display, revised controls, and a translucent black chassis with gold accents. It will be sold as a standalone device or in a bundle that adds ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 gaming AR glasses, a ROG x dbrand Killswitch Case, and a ROG x Pelican Protector Case.
Asus has set the Australian recommended retail price at AUD $2,499 for the handheld and AUD $4,499 for the bundle. Pre-orders are available through the Asus store and JB Hi-Fi.
The launch expands Asus ROG's handheld line under the Ally name, with the X20 positioned above the original ROG Xbox Ally and the ROG Xbox Ally X. The range targets different types of players, from casual users to buyers willing to pay more for a collector-focused device.
A key hardware change in the X20 is the move to OLED. The 7.4-inch display supports full HD resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, variable refresh rate, Dolby Vision, and is listed as a Nebula HDR panel.
Controls have also been revised following user feedback. The X20 includes full-size TMR joysticks and what Asus calls a Transforming D-Pad, alongside Xbox-style ergonomics, impulse triggers, assignable back buttons, and HD haptics.
Inside, the machine uses an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme Processor with 24GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 1TB M.2 SSD. It also includes WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, a microSD Express card reader, a 3.5mm audio jack, and two USB-C ports, one of them USB4.
Those specifications place the X20 in the premium tier of handheld PC gaming devices, where manufacturers are trying to bring PC-style game libraries into portable form factors. Asus is attempting to differentiate the X20 through anniversary branding, collector-edition design, and optional accessories aimed at a more immersive setup.
The battery is listed at 80Wh and the unit weighs 756g. Its dimensions are 300.0 x 121.1 x 51.3mm, highlighting the trade-off common in this segment between larger screens and battery capacity on one side and portability on the other.
Family gaming
Asus tied the launch to broader gaming habits in Australia, citing IGEA research showing the average Australian gamer is 35 years old and that 89 per cent of parents play games with their children. It argued that shared gaming at home has increased competition for the household television, creating an opening for handheld devices with larger displays.
"The way Australians play has changed significantly over the last two decades, and our hardware needed to evolve as well," said Brad Howe, Head of Consumer for ASUS Australia. "Gaming is now a shared family activity, but dedicated players are also looking for more premium, uncompromised experiences that can serve as a genuine alternative to a traditional PC setup. The ROG XBOX Ally X20 is the result of listening to both. We've upgraded the screen and controls for a console-quality experience you can hold, while providing a versatile device that solves the one TV problem for the modern gaming family."
Asus's messaging suggests it sees handheld gaming not only as an enthusiast category, but also as part of a broader household entertainment market. That places the X20 in a dual role: a premium gaming device for individual buyers and a secondary screen for families where multiple people want to play at once.
Range strategy
The X20 also serves a portfolio purpose. By adding a higher-priced flagship model, Asus can stretch the Ally brand across a wider price range while giving dedicated buyers a more expensive option with distinctive design features and bundled accessories.
"We believe in providing options for every type of player," said Howe. "The expanded Ally family ensures that whether you're a casual gamer or an enthusiast who demands the absolute best, there's an Ally for you. The X20 is the hero of that family, a device that proves you don't have to compromise on performance, even when you're away from the TV."
The bundle includes the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 glasses, which use micro-OLED displays and can present a virtual screen of up to 171 inches at four metres. The glasses also include built-in speakers, microphones, and USB-C connectivity, positioning them as an accessory for buyers who want a larger personal display without using a television or monitor.
The anniversary edition arrives as gaming hardware companies continue to test how much consumers will pay for portable devices that bridge consoles, laptops, and PCs. With the X20, Asus is betting that a combination of premium specifications, collector styling, and optional AR accessories can justify a high-end place in that market.
